Rare Siblings
Support for Siblings
A rare disease diagnosis has an enormous impact on the entire family. It upsets the balance of family dynamics and interactions, and many issues can arise as a result.
Parents and guardians of children with rare diseases become caregivers as well. This is in addition to their traditional role as parents and is distinct. In times of urgency, the needs of unaffected siblings can take a backseat to the child with a rare disease.
Family members depend on each other and a rare disease can bring a family closer together in fighting for the well-being of their child. Many siblings of children with rare diseases show an enormous capacity for compassion and empathy.
However, when a rare disease strikes, the siblings can also be at risk for mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, aggression, withdrawal, and loneliness.
Conner’s Crusade is committed to supporting and celebrating the amazing siblings of children affected by rare diseases.
