Ayden Ugo-Alum

On April 12, 2023, Ayden had a catatonic seizure at 8 years old while on vacation with his mother in Utah. He was immediately airlifted to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, where he was put in the care of one of the few renowned specialists in adrenoleukodystrophy. Following an MRI and genetic testing, he was formally diagnosed with the cerebral form of adrenoleukodystrophy within one week after his seizure. Ayden was referred to specialists on the East Coast for continued care. After meeting with transfer teams in New York and Minneapolis, it was determined that his disease was too far progressed for a bone marrow transplant to be effective, coupled with the fact that he did not have a sufficient match in the donor base. The transfer teams estimated that he would have only 3 years to live and that he would be losing his vision, hearing, and ability to walk within the coming months. He was quickly placed under compassionate care to receive a special medicine for the disease currently under clinical trial. Since this medicine is accessible only in Europe, he travels from his home in New Jersey to Paris, France, every three months to obtain refills. Almost a year later, despite a high Loes score of 14.5, Ayden continues to thrive as normal in his everyday life, with full vision, hearing and executive motor skills intact. He is a living miracle and continues to flabbergast his doctors with his great condition. Ayden is a warrior and valiantly continues to fight!
