Joey Brocato

Joey is a larger-than-life seven-year-old boy coming up on the first anniversary of his bone marrow transplant. In July 2021, Joey became unresponsive at a local hospital and was transferred to the University Of Maryland pediatric ICU. He was diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency and was hospitalized for five days. In the weeks to follow, he was diagnosed with ALD by his endocrinologist. Joey was the first Maryland boy diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy. Joey had one MRI after diagnosis that was “normal.” After six months, a lesion was found in the frontal lobe of his brain. Nine months later, his lesion started to grow, and it was time for a bone marrow transplant. Joey and his dad packed up and went to the University Of Minnesota for this life-saving treatment. Joey continues to receive care at the University Of Minnesota, the University Of Maryland, and Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. Joey and his family are blessed they were able to stop this devastating disease while they still had time.
